Character Summary

Misaka's brother and the director of the Ninth Officios R&D base in Siberia. He is both scientist and doctor.

Physical Description

• He has brown hair naturally, but dyed it white. It reaches down to his shoulders.
• His eyes are the same brown as Misaka's.

Character History

In his youth, Souji prefered to spend his time with anime and video games and was considered rather undependable. He used to be the personal assistant to Doktor Emma Strauss and Professor Fran Madaraki of the Thirteenth Officio.

Betrayer & Hunt

Souji immediately dislikes the new Warmaster upon seeing her but thanks her for taking care of his sister Misaka. He treats everyone's wounds after their battle with an enemy magical girl during their hunting trip.

Souji's first reaction to meeting the new Warmaster is being unimpressed, even withstanding her trademark glare, but he is put off by receiving a bag full of porn from her.

Some time later, he is sent to wake Chiaki and Midori up for a hunting trip, telling them to get their magical asses in gear since he has research to do. After a small exchange of vulgar implications, he thanks Chiaki for taking care of Misaka, although he still considers her a bad choice for Warmaster. When Chiaki asks him about Kharn's retirement in Siberia, he is surprised that she doesn't remember her being responsible and tells her to ask Kharn herself, his animosity obvious.

He tries stopping Misaka and Kharn from arguing, resulting in his sister kicking him, starting an argument between them after which he angrily returns to the base, telling Chiaki not to let his sister get hurt.

When the hunting party returns after fighting Mirai and her horde of bears, Souji watches Chiaki's and Midori's bedside, reading the porn the Warmaster in training bought him. After some bickering, he tells Chiaki that matters regarding soul gems are tricky and that she should be nicer to the one handling her treatment. He gives Chiaki a cup of coffee and tells her that Kharn is preparing food outside and that he will watch over Midori while she is still asleep. He also thanks her for keeping Misaka safe again before she leaves.

Treatment & Training

After hearing loud noises in the base, he finds Chiaki unconscious in the elevator and decides to start the scheduled treatment ahead of time. Afterward, Chiaki has a surge of amnesia, for which Misaka blames him. He states this should not happen and explains it should only be temporary. He then leads Chiaki to the base's training area where she is to practice with Kharn.

The night before the scheduled procedure, Souji and Kharn hear loud banging noises in the base. He investigates and finds Chiaki unconscious in the elevator. Fully awake, he and Kharn decide to start the treatment right away. While Kharn talks to Chiaki, Souji makes the neccessary preparations before administering narcotics and starting the procedure.

In the morning, Souji is preparing breakfast in the living areas kitchen. After hearing that Chiaki is suffering from amnesia after the procedure, Misaka shouts and blames her brother for it, kicking him hard before locking herself into her room. He tries to tell her that the effect is only temporary but she doesn't listen.

After some arguing with Kharn, he starts working on his laptop, telling Chiaki that his sister will probably calm down after crying herself to sleep. He then apologizes for the memory loss, mentioning that it should not have happened in the first place and will likely be only temporary. Kharn states that the procedure was a complete success and should not have any side effects and that they have to make sure it doesn't happen again during the final treatment. Souji replies that it might not be neccessarfy, but Kharn insists they should prepare for it nonetheless.

When Chiaki drops a manga from her inventory, Midori panics and Souji claims it belongs to him to save her the trouble of explaining the background of "The Adventures of Miracle Midori and Murder Mayumi" to her superior again.

As Kharn decides to start her training session with Chiaki, Souji voices concern about using the golden weapons, but Kharn replies that these are why Chiaki is there in the first place, insisting on using them.

After cleaning up, he leads Chiaki and Midori to the training area, requesting Chiaki not to get carried away during training as Kharn tends to do that a lot. He unlocks the weapon storage and leaves the area to continue his research.

He meets his sisterback in the kitchen and tries to calm her down once more. She dashes towards the returning Chiaki, has a conversation with her and returns to the kitchen, beaming and talking about her new big sister.

Midori & Miracle Midori

During the interrogation of the captured magical girl from earlier, a witch barrier manifests inside the base and swallows Chiaki. Souji prepares equipment for Midori and teleports her inside, keeping watch with his technical equipment while Misaka prepares Tiny Pete.

They contact each other several times over the course of many hours until Midori asks him to pilot Tiny Pete to talk down Kharn, who escaped the base's silent room after losing her mind. He agrees but is knocked out by his sister and only wakes up after everything is over. He talks to the injured Kharn and makes her accept staying alive, living with him.

While Chiaki, Kharn and Midori interrogate Mirai, Souji is told to prepare an emergency short distance teleporter for them. Shortly after, the base alarm flares up, announcing the presence of a witch. Souji takes the emerging, weakened Kharn to the couch and tries to make her incoherent babbling stop to tell him what happened in the interrogation room to find out how to save the missing Chiaki.

He tells Midori that the witch is sealed in the interrogation room, but they can't easily get Chiaki out as something already held her back earlier. Now that she has been sucked into the witch barrier, getting a teleport lock on her is impossible and somebody needs to infiltrate it to kill the witch from inside. Misaka insists on going in and angrily refuses to listen to her brothers attempt to dissuade her until Midori convinces the young engineer to stay.

Souji injects a silver liquid into Kharn's neck that relaxes her body, explaining that she needs to recover in a silent room but will be all right. Midori decides to head into the barrier alone and have Tiny Pete brought to her when needed, receiving a watch with an integrated teleporter beacon from Misaka. The young engineer explains that it should be possible to teleport one person out of the barrier with the Terminator, but Souji advises against trying it since they have no test data regarding witch barriers.

He reminds Misaka to prepare Tiny Pete for maximum fire power and tells Midori that he doesn't know how his sister and Chiaki became so close before asking if the green haired magical girl needs anything to take with her into the barrier. She requests grief seeds and some of the medication Souji gave Kharn, which he supplies her with in a handy hypogun.

They head to the teleporter room where Souji activates an array of machinery, telling Midori that it worked when he saved Kharn some time ago, implying it will work again. After Midori departs, Souji keeps checking the scanner readings. He detects a powerful witch near Midori's position while Misaka talks to her.

Later, he spots another anomaly close to her and is relieved to hear that she is still alive when Misaka manages to establish a connection again. Midori reports that she encountered Chiaki and Souji confirms the scanner reading before telling her that the next signal is directly north of her. He mentions that one of the anomalies disappeared after a huge event, and that the second wandered for a bit before disappearing as well.

When Midori asks about Kharn, Souji tells her to stay focused on the task at hand, hiding the fact that she has escaped. But Midori presses the issue and he reveals what happened, telling her that the former Warmaster used the teleporter to enter the barrier and is currently undetectable. He tells Midori to run away if she encounters Kharn. He also mentions that there is no way to save Mirai if she has already turned into a witch, mentioning that it took him, Murderface and fifteen Culexus to stop Kharn when she witched out a second time. Midori thanks him for his honest answer and promises to do her best to bring a happy ending for everyone before he disconnects again.

Three hours later Midori calls him again and Souji informs her that something huge is closing in on her position, suggesting to move on right away. Midori explains that she saw Kharn joining the pink haired Goddess, how she encountered Mirai and that they plan on reuniting the fragments. Souji, shaken by Kharn's circumstances, tell Midori to forget about her and that Kharn herself has told him about how she will unavoidably live up to her title as the Betrayer one day.

At that moment the supposedly dead Malal interrupts him from Midori's side and insists on not abandoning Kharn. Shocked by Malals presence, Souji hurriedly follows her demand for more scanner readings and explains that they identified the huge signal as the original teleporter beacon heading towards their group. He thanks the Culexus for still trying to save Kharn and severs the connection.

Not long after that Midori calls again and tells him that they found the third fragment, that Kharn is still alive and that he should try to track her. She also asks him to find the coordinates of the fourth fragment and contact her as soon as he finds it.

Some time later she calls him again and asks if he can pilot Tiny Pete to talk to Kharn during the upcoming encounter. He confirms that the controls are simple enough and that he is willing to enter the manifested nightmare to save his partner, declaring that they will marry right afterwards regardless of the former Warmaster's opinion. While he asks if Midori needs anything else, the group disappears from the radar as if they were dead. Shocked, he mentions that the beacon still works and Midori just tells him to get ready to depart.

Just as he prepares to enter the cockpit, Misaka knocks him out from behind and ties her brother up with electrical tape. When he regains consciousness and finally manages to untie himself, everyone has already returned to the real world. Holding a bag of ice to his head, he enters the ruined interrogation room and asks to talk to Kharn.

Chiaki and Midori leave them alone, the Warmaster in training carrying the young engineer with her. Kharn tries to explain her behavior but Souji keeps dismissing her reasons. They shout at each other for a while before Kharn eventually breaks down. Souji slaps her tree times before telling her something in a low voice to which Kharn replies in a murmur, and they embrace each other.

Malal Flashback

Souji is part of the team that altered Ekaterina Valnikov, but wants to get the girl out of captive slavery and experimentation. Malal infiltrates Varrigan City to rescue her and convinces Souji to help. He sedates Ekaterina to prevent Strauss from making her go berserk remotely and carries the unconscious girl, following the Culexus outside.

They make their way to the docks, interrupted by Strauss and one of her experiments that Malal manages to defeat, and reach the Thirteenth Officio's flagship, now under the control of Chief Director Madaraki. Souji assists in the procedure of removing Ekaterina's control implants after Malal assures that he was useful.

Five years ago, Souji was working as an assistant for the Thirteenth Officio and helped Doktor Emma Strauss alter Ekaterina Valnikov, a task that put him under a great amount of pressure and guilt.

During Malal's rescue mission in Varrigan City five years ago, Professor Madaraki tells her to look for Souji inside Casino City's underground fighting ring to help her save the young Ekaterina Valnikov who is being kept as a test subject and arena fighter.

In the lower levels of the Blood God's Arena he encounters Malal who claims she wants to save Valnikov. Jittery from high amounts of caffeine and equally nervous and wary Souji doesn't believe her and points a shotgun at the Culexus after knocking his head against the desk while jumping to the gun. Malal shows him the ID card of his superior, Professor Madaraki, claiming she sent her, but Souji calls it a fake. He threatens to shoot Malal if she doesn't leave and exclaims that Kat, as he calls her, has gone through enough and nobody would get her.

She tries to reason with him, but he mentions that Strauss said somebody would show up with her story. Frustrated Malal uses her magic to disassemble his gun from afar and reassembles in her own hands, stating that she came to steal Ekaterina from the Thirteenth and bring her back to where she was kidnapped from in the first place. Calming down, she returns his gun, telling him that Madaraki would like fixing his arm if he tore it off misusing it. Proving she knows the professor and not shooting him convinces Souji of her intentions enough to help.

Souji explains that he wants Ekaterina out of there and mentions that she kept repeating one word over and over: Malal. The young man deactivates the cage and explains that while unconscious Ekaterina is harmless since Strauss' implants can't turn her into a berserker while her body is disabled. In order to ensure she doesn't activate them during their escape, he suggests keeping Ekaterina heavily sedated.

Malal asks if they could remove the implants right away, but Souji explains that they need a well equipped operation room for the process and have to remove them from both her body and soul gem simultaneously or their link will destroy both when one is removed.

He walks over to inject more sedatives, but at that moment Ekaterina's visor starts glowing red and her claws move behind his back. Malal quickly unleashes her power on the russian magical girl, flinging her back as far as the chains allow and making her collapse.

Malal tells the confused young man about the visor, which makes him panic as this means she is supposed to go into the fight. Right that moment he notices footsteps approaching and tells Malal to hide from Strauss' personal goons. The Culexus refuses to hide, stating that she found what she came for and will make her way out right now. Souji calls her plan crazy but figures that he is in trouble anyway, hands Malal his shotgun and tranquilizes Ekaterina.

While Malal takes cover Souji distracts the goons until shutting off the lights and diving into cover so the Culexus can kill the six opponents. When Malal kills off the goons Souji switches the lights on again and empties his stomach at the sight of the messy corpses. After wondering if this is what magical girls do, Souji prepares Ekaterina for transport, wrapping her in a big poncho to cover most of her body and they head upstairs.

Upstairs in the backstage area they notice that battle has started in the arena and realize that Enyo is fighting Nicole Touchdown instead of Ekaterina. Souji tells Malal that her friend will die in this place, but she ensures that Nicole can take care of her own and that they will more likely wear each other out instead of taking lives.

Outside they find a group of guards beheaded by a magical girl with dead eyes. Malal tells him to get himself and Ekaterina to the nearby bike's passenger seat while she talks to the magical girl. After a short exchange of words, another group of goons shows up and Malal starts the bike while the other girl takes care of their pursuers.

Not long after their departure on Redline Highway, a large group of bounty hunters appears behind them. Malal signals Souji to hold on tight, releases a batch of grenades from their vehicle and starts up a booster that drives them forward at an incredible speed. They push new bounty hunters away with the pressure of their air stream and even wreck one vehicle completely.

Souji yells something, but is drowned in the noise. As the booster runs out they spot a plane above them where the Thirteenth Warmaster sends one of her experiments jumping towards them, a spiked bulky monstrosity with thorny metal cylinders in place of hands. Malal dodges a second before the creature would hit, but loses control of Schpeltiger as it grabs the rear end.

The creature is dragged behind while Malal struggles to force the bike back on track, but is eventually thrown off when it tears the back wheel out. The three riders are hurled across the street and the Culexus taps her power to slow Souji's fall, preventing him and Ekaterina from cracking their heads open upon impact.

Still holding Ekaterina in his arms, the scientist points behind Malal, towards the creature. She tells him to run to the docks and have Madaraki start treating the girl right away, but the young man refuses to leave the Culexus alone until she starts shouting. He then dashes along the road with a surprisingly high speed for someone who spends most of his time in front of a computer.

Not long after parting, an armored vehicle approaches from behind, the driver giving Souji a big enough shock to wet himself before revealing herself as Malal. A white haired magical girl helps him and Ekaterina inside where Souji falls asleep right away, arms still wrapped around the sedated girl.

On board the Rafflesia, Professor Madaraki has a group of Medicae take Ekaterina into a room to prepare for her treatment. Souji requests to assist, and after Malal confirms that he was useful in saving the girl, he is allowed and told to have the Medicae sanitize him before entering the operation theater.

• Souji's character design is based on Accelerator from Toaru Majutsu no Index.
• He is considered a marksman equal to his sister, but gave up on hunting after breaking his nose with a particularily large caliber rifle.
